The truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth...

"Youth work promotes young people's personal and social development, helping them learn about themselves, others and society, through non-formal educational activities which combine enjoyment, challenge and learning.
It is characterised by its voluntary nature, where the young person chooses to engage in an activity undertaken in their free time. It starts with young people's view of the world, helping them to develop stronger relationships and collective identities, respect and value differences, take control of their lives and develop a voice.
It is delivered via a complex network of providers: community groups, voluntary organisations and local authorities, in youth clubs and community centres, in parks, on the streets, in mobiles, in schools and further education colleges and many other settings. "

Youth Scrutiny Committee

Youth Scrutiny Committee is the new buzz in the halls of all our offices at the moment.

It has been decided that as a council we should have a Youth Scrutiny panel or committee to give it its official title.

What a great idea.

I was lucky to attend a meeting on Friday that explained the reasons for this project to go forth.
It has complete support from the very top down, which means a high profile provision.

The aim is to have the group, hopefully of around 20 young people, to be up and running by the middle of next year.

The committee will report direct to the main council scrutiny board a real chance for the voices of the young people of Essex to be heard and for them to have a level of power to ask those questions that need asking, but from their perspective.

I will keep you posted on the progression at regular intervals but I'm also keen to hear from others that have undertaken this process of are thinking of this for their area.
